As someone who’s had to file more travel insurance claims than I’d like to admit—like the time my camera got stolen on a sleeper train in Spain, my bag was slashed at Johannesburg airport, or when my backpack disappeared from a bus in Nicaragua—I’ve learned the hard way how important it is to keep your belongings safe while traveling.
One of my must-have travel essentials? An anti-theft backpack. These come with handy security features like slash-proof straps, lockable zippers, and even cables that let you secure your bag to a fixed object. If only I had one in Nicaragua!
To help fellow travelers avoid becoming a victim of theft, we put 24 anti-theft backpacks to the test in the Travel + Leisure lab. We slashed them with box cutters, secured them to chairs and simulated a theft attempt, and even tried sneaking into hidden pockets unnoticed. We rated them on design, space, comfort, security, durability, and value. But the testing doesn’t stop there—we’ll keep using these backpacks over the next six months to see how well they hold up in real-world travel.
Best Overall
Solo NY Stealth Hybrid Backpack

The Solo NY Stealth Hybrid Backpack is a smart pick for travelers looking for a versatile, security-focused bag. Made from recycled plastic bottles with a water-resistant coating, it easily converts from a backpack to a tote or shoulder bag. It also has a handy back strap that lets you slide it over your luggage handle—perfect for travel days.
That said, it’s on the smaller side (we couldn’t even fit a puffer jacket inside), so it’s best for warm-weather trips when you don’t need bulky layers. But we love the interior organization panel and the laptop sleeve, which fits up to a 14.1-inch laptop. T+L writer Rosie Marder, who tested the bag, especially liked the hidden back pocket, calling it “easily accessible and the perfect size for a passport or wallet.”
Security-wise, this backpack holds up well. It features slashproof fabric and wire-reinforced straps. We tested them with a box cutter—the blade left some scratches on the straps but didn’t cut through. The outer fabric did get a small tear, but the reinforced lining stayed intact, keeping everything inside safe. Other anti-theft features include puncture-resistant zippers, lockable zipper pulls, and an extra latch on the front pocket to keep pickpockets out.
After three months of testing, we love how easily this bag switches between a backpack and a shoulder bag, making it great for crowded public transport. Plus, since some museums don’t allow backpacks, the ability to carry it differently comes in handy. However, for longer trips, the small size might be limiting.
One small downside: the straps aren’t padded. While the bag itself is lightweight and comfortable to wear, we noticed the straps tended to loosen while walking, so they could be more secure.
The Details:
📏 Size: 14.5 x 11.7 x 4 inches
⚖️ Weight: 1.2 pounds
🛡️ Security Features: Slash-resistant fabric & straps, locking zippers, hidden pocket
💻 Storage: Laptop sleeve (fits up to 14.1 inches)
💦 Extras: Water-resistant coating
Overall, it’s a stylish, eco-friendly option with solid security features—ideal for city trips and daily use!

Baggallini Securtex Anti-Theft Vacation Backpack

The Baggallini Securtex Anti-theft Vacation Backpack is a lightweight, compact, and secure option for travelers. It comes in a variety of colors, from classic black to stylish portobello, and is made from water-resistant material reinforced with slash-resistant panels. During our box cutter test, the outer layer showed some damage, but the interior stayed protected—even after multiple slashes, the backpack held up impressively well.
Security-wise, this bag goes the extra mile. It features double-cable, cut-resistant straps and RFID-protected pockets to keep your personal information safe. But our favorite feature? The locking zippers on the main and back pockets. Sure, they add about five extra seconds when opening and closing the bag, but that’s likely enough to deter a pickpocket. There’s even a special anti-theft zipper pull hoop on the most accessible front pocket for extra protection.
While this is a smaller backpack, it’s surprisingly roomy thanks to its smart organization. Not all laptops will fit inside, but it does include a padded sleeve for a tablet, a rear wallet section with two zippered pockets and six card slots, two side water bottle pockets, and even a headphone port for convenience.
The Details:
📏 Size: 10 x 13 x 3.5 inches
⚖️ Weight: 1.1 pounds
🛡️ Security Features: Slash-resistant fabric & straps, locking zippers, RFID protection, hidden pockets
💦 Extras: Water-resistant material
If you’re looking for a compact, well-organized backpack that keeps your belongings safe without weighing you down, this one’s a great choice!

Best Carry-on
Pacsafe Venturesafe EXP45 ECONYL

The Pacsafe EXP45 Anti-theft Carry-on Travel Pack is built to meet most international carry-on size requirements, making it a great choice for frequent travelers. Made from recycled polyester with a water-repellent coating, this bag is both eco-friendly and durable. You can wear it as a backpack or carry it like a briefcase, and it features puncture-resistant zippers with lockable pulls for extra security. The built-in padlock took a little getting used to, but once we got the hang of it, we really appreciated the added protection.
We put the cut-resistant straps to the test with a box cutter, and while it left some surface scratches, the wire-reinforced inner layer stayed intact—so even if someone tried to cut their way in, they wouldn’t get far. T+L editor Taylor Fox pointed out one of the best security features: the laptop sleeve is inside the front pocket. So even if someone managed to cut through the first layer, they’d still have to open the bag to reach your laptop. Plus, it includes a stainless steel cable to anchor the bag to a fixed object, which is useful when you need to take it off during transit.
This bag is also spacious and well-organized. The clamshell-style main compartment easily held everything on our packing list—a jacket, toiletry bag, headphones, water bottle, keys, laptop, phone, passport, wallet, and chargers—with room to spare. Other organization features include a padded laptop sleeve, an RFID-blocking pocket big enough for a passport, a front organizer section for cables and chargers, and a side water bottle pocket.
One downside? It’s pretty big and a bit heavy (4.3 pounds), so it might not be the best option for smaller-framed travelers. After three months of testing, we also found that the shoulder straps could use more padding, as wearing it for long periods can get uncomfortable.
The Details:
📏 Size: 21.7 x 13 x 7.9 inches
⚖️ Weight: 4.3 pounds
🛡️ Security Features: Slash-resistant fabric & straps, locking zippers, chair lock
💻 Extras: Laptop pocket, RFID protection, water-resistant material
If you need a secure, carry-on-friendly backpack with plenty of space and theft-proof features, this is a solid choice—just be aware that it’s a bit on the heavier side!

The XDDesign Bobby Bizz is a great pick for busy professionals who need a versatile and secure bag. It easily switches between a backpack and a briefcase thanks to its detachable straps, which can be stored inside when not in use. It even comes with an extra messenger-style strap for more carrying options. Made from high-quality polyester with a reflective print, it adds a bit of extra visibility at night. Plus, the built-in metal frame and anti-shock padding help protect your belongings from bumps and drops. While the slash-resistant fabric held up well in our tests, we were able to cut through the straps with a box cutter.
Thoughtful Security Features
After three months of testing, we’re still impressed by this bag’s smart security features. One of our favorites is the locking chair strap, which let us secure the backpack to a chair at the airport while stepping away. There’s also a hidden pocket with an integrated USB port, which is super convenient for charging on the go. While it doesn’t have lockable zippers, we love that the main compartment fully unzips, making packing and unpacking a breeze. Inside, there are padded compartments for a 15.6-inch laptop and a 10-inch tablet, along with plenty of smaller pockets to keep things organized.
Comfort & Fit
According to editor Taylor Fox, the backpack fits well and is highly adjustable. The padded straps and back panel made it comfortable to wear, even when fully packed.

SHRRADOO Anti Theft Laptop Backpack

If you’re looking for an affordable, spacious, and feature-packed backpack, the Shrradoo Anti-theft Laptop Backpack is a solid choice. It costs just over half the price of our top pick, making it a great budget option. While it doesn’t have slashproof fabric, we were pleasantly surprised by the high-quality exterior materials and hardware—though the inner lining felt a bit less durable. Despite its large size, the bag is lightweight and easy to carry.
Spacious & Secure
The padded laptop compartment can fit up to a 16.3-inch laptop, and we managed to fit both a laptop and a tablet inside. However, we did notice extra space that might allow them to move around a bit. The built-in combination lock on this compartment adds an extra layer of security.
The main compartment is very roomy—we easily packed multiple jackets and toiletry bags—while the front compartment has tons of pockets, pen loops, and a fob hook to keep small items organized. If you’re worried about pickpockets, there’s a hidden pocket on the back where you can safely stash your passport, phone, or wallet.
Comfort & Travel-Friendly Features
Other handy features include a luggage strap, an external USB port for charging on the go (you’ll need your own power bank), and a stabilizing chest strap for extra support. The padded shoulder straps and back panel make it comfortable for all-day wear.
After three months of testing, we found this bag perfect for travel but a bit too large for everyday use.
The Details:
📏 Size: 19.5 x 14 x 10.5 inches
🔒 Security: Locking zippers, hidden pockets
💻 Extras: Laptop pocket, USB port
🌧️ Material: Water-resistant
If you need an affordable, travel-friendly backpack with lots of storage and security features, this one is definitely worth considering!

Tips for Buying Anti-theft Backpacks
How to Pick the Right Anti-Theft Backpack
Choosing an anti-theft backpack isn’t just about getting the one with the most features—it’s about finding what matters most to you. Some bags come with all the bells and whistles, while others focus on just a few key security features. Keep in mind that more features usually mean a higher price, so it’s worth figuring out what you really need before making a decision.
Must-Have vs. Nice-to-Have Features
One of the most useful and affordable security features is lockable zippers. Some high-end backpacks include a built-in combination lock, while others use a clip system or loop design to secure the zipper pulls. Even simple locks can make a big difference in keeping your stuff safe.
Other features, like slashproof fabric and straps, are great for extra protection—but they’re only necessary if you’re traveling to areas where theft is common. A chair lock is another handy feature, especially if you spend a lot of time at airports, train stations, or on overnight public transport. But if you’re always wearing your bag, you might not need it.
Durability Matters
A good travel backpack isn’t just secure—it also needs to be tough enough to handle daily wear and tear. The last thing you want is a bag that falls apart mid-trip. Look for high-quality materials like high-denier polyester, nylon, or canvas, and check for reinforced stitching and padding in areas that take the most stress. Even the best slashproof fabric won’t help if the bag itself isn’t well-made!
Finding the Right Size
Backpacks come in all shapes and sizes, from compact daypacks for sightseeing to heavy-duty travel bags for long trips. Choosing the right size is key—too small, and you’ll be struggling to fit everything in; too big, and it becomes bulky and hard to carry. The most versatile backpacks have an expansion feature or compression straps so you can adjust the size as needed.
By focusing on the features that match your needs, choosing durable materials, and picking the right size, you’ll find the perfect anti-theft backpack for your travels!
