The right gear can make or break your hiking trip. If you’re planning to trek cross-country for several days, having good hiking equipment is a must — not just to survive, but to actually enjoy the experience! A good backpack should be your first investment before hitting the trail.
I’ve tested a lot of hiking backpacks over the years, and I’ve figured out the 10 must-have features that make all the difference. Let’s dive in!
1. A Fully Adjustable Suspension System
Everyone’s body is different — broad or narrow shoulders, long or short torsos, curved or flat backs. A good hiking backpack should adjust to fit all body types comfortably.
The first thing I check is the suspension system. You should be able to move the shoulder straps up and down to match your back’s length and lock them in place with a strong buckle. The straps should adjust in and out to sit comfortably on your shoulders. A hip belt should sit snugly on your hips and move naturally with your steps. And a sternum strap should adjust easily and provide good support.
When a backpack fits right, it feels almost weightless — even when it’s fully loaded. After completing a 12-day hike across the Outer Hebrides, I can tell you firsthand that a well-fitted backpack can make you forget you’re even carrying one!
2. Quick-Access Outer Pockets
Packing smart is key. I organize my gear into three categories:
- Nighttime gear — tent, sleeping bag, toiletries, extra clothes.
- Daytime gear — stove, food, snacks, spare camera batteries, extra layers.
- Quick-access essentials — rain gear, maps, camp shoes, first aid kit, sunscreen, and toilet paper.
A great backpack has plenty of outer pockets so you can grab what you need without digging through everything. The last thing you want is to scramble for your rain jacket in the middle of a downpour. Having dedicated quick-access pockets makes life a lot easier.

3. A Separate Bottom Compartment
Packing your backpack properly can save your back. Heavy items like food, water, and your tent should sit close to your back, while lighter and less-used items go at the bottom.
That’s why I love backpacks with a separate bottom compartment. It makes it easier to organize everything and access your sleeping bag or other lightweight gear without unpacking everything else.
4. External Straps and Loops
While I try not to hang too much on the outside of my backpack (to keep my balance), it’s handy to have options. External straps and loops are great for drying socks and shirts in the sun or securing wet gear.
I also use side straps to attach a reusable trash bag. Even if you don’t use the straps often, it’s nice to have the option in case of an emergency.
5. Easy-to-Open System
Most backpacks have a drawstring closure for the main compartment and zippers for quick-access areas. My current backpack from Vaude is a bit different — it uses a roll-top system, like a lunch bag, with a magnetic strip and two plastic clips.
This system makes it easier to adjust the size and keeps water out better than zippers. Plus, it’s easy to open and close even with cold or wet hands.
6. A Hydration System Compartment
I always carry a water bottle, but my main water source is a 3-liter hydration system. A good backpack should have a separate compartment for the water bag, which keeps it secure and prevents condensation from soaking the rest of your gear.
It should also have a small opening for the drinking tube, so you can easily grab a sip without taking off your pack.

7. A Spacious Hip Belt Pocket
Phones have gotten bigger — and so should hip belt pockets! A good pocket should hold your phone, plus other essentials like sunglasses, lip balm, sunscreen, or insect repellent.
On some days, I keep my wallet in there too for easy access when I need to pay for something. Since hip belt pockets aren’t usually covered by rain covers, I avoid putting anything valuable there when it’s wet.
8. A Detachable Daypack
After setting up camp, you don’t want to lug your whole backpack around just for a short hike. That’s why I love backpacks with a detachable top compartment that doubles as a daypack.
It’s perfect for carrying water, snacks, and a rain jacket without the extra weight. If your pack doesn’t have this feature, a lightweight daypack is a good backup option.
9. A Flexible Side Water Bottle Pocket
This is one of those things I didn’t realize I needed until I had it. A flexible side pocket makes it easy to grab your water bottle without taking off your pack.
My current pack has a drawstring to keep the bottle secure, even when I’m scrambling over rocks or bending down.
10. An Integrated Rain Cover
I’ve never owned a backpack with a built-in rain cover — but I’ve always wished I had one! It’s one less thing to pack and worry about.
If you buy a separate rain cover, make sure it fits over your entire pack, including the hip belt. Some even have cutouts for the straps to keep everything secure while you walk.
