Whether you’re heading out for a quick hike or planning a multi-day trip in the backcountry, picking the right backpack makes a big difference. A good backpack should not only fit your gear—it should fit you comfortably too. Our guide will help you choose the best one for your needs.
Backpack Sizes for Hiking
The size of your backpack depends on three main things:

- How long your hike is
- The environment or terrain
- The season and expected weather
These factors will help you figure out what gear to bring, and that tells you what size pack you’ll need.

For short hikes, you’ll only need the basics—water, a light jacket, snacks, and maybe trekking poles.

How to Choose a Backpack That Fits Your Body
Even the best backpack will feel uncomfortable if it doesn’t fit you right. To find your ideal pack, you need to know two things: your torso length and hip size.

Measuring Torso Length
Your height doesn’t matter as much as your torso. If the pack is too long or too short, the weight won’t sit right and you’ll feel it.
To measure:
- Tilt your head forward and find the bony bump at the base of your neck (C7 vertebra).
- Measure straight down to the point on your back that lines up with the top of your hip bones.
Measuring Hip Size
Backpacks should rest mostly on your hips—about 80% of the weight should be carried there, not on your shoulders.
To measure:
- Wrap a flexible tape around the top of your hips (a little higher than your waistline).
- This number is usually different from your pants size.
Some Thule packs have adjustable torso and hip sizes. Others don’t, so it’s important to check the fit guide to find what works for your body.
